A First-Hand Experience with the Success Insights Communication Style Report

Interviewing for a job in the current job market often requires a jobseeker to participate in several steps throughout the selection process: drug screenings, background checks, work-related screenings such as typing, math and IQ tests, and even compatibility or personality assessments. Many employers use various types of assessments depending of the type of position for which a person is applying.

Tips 4 Success from a Jobseeker:

I have taken many different types of tests and assessments for jobs in which I was interested - some that I felt were reasonable for the position and some that seemed to have no relation to the position at all, some that I felt confident about when I finished and some that made me question whether I was really as prepared for the job as I thought.

Recently I participated in the Success Insights Report with Resumes 4 Success. This report is used to discover a jobseeker's communication style and behavioral strengths. The assessment was simple to take - I was asked to rank myself based on a series of descriptive word phrases, which I had to rate from 'most like me' to 'least like me' and I was asked to rank each set as quickly as possible without lingering too long on one answer: 'go with your first instinct, and don't overthink the answer.'

I received the results of my assessment very quickly after completing and submitting the questionnaire. The results of the report are explained in a 22-page document, which described me, better than I can explain myself.

The explanation of the results is very thorough. It explains to the reader how to communicate with, understand and even manage me. Each section of the report speaks to different aspects of the work environment:

    * Value to the organization

    * How to communicate including do's and don'ts

    * Ideal working environment

    * Natural and Adapted style of dealing with the work environment

    * Motivators

    * Management tips

    * How to improve the working relationship

One of the goals of these results seems to be that the employer and employee could meet and discuss how to make the working relationship most effective and productive for both parties.

After reading through my results, which were pretty straight forward, I was amazed how accurately it described me. I did feel that a small number of statements did not match with my view of my behavioral style. So, I began to question myself: Was the assessment right about me? Do I need to take a harder look at myself?

After my consultation with Jane Roqueplot, Certified Professional Behavioral Analyst, I had my questions answered and gained a lot of knowledge.

I now realize that there are people who really do appreciate my style; Fast-paced, assertive, people oriented, and fun loving. I also learned there are many jobs that need my style to do the job well.

Jane also taught me that not everyone views me the same. While some people think I'm motivating and inspirational and fun to be with, there are others who may view my seemingly positive characteristics as the very traits that irritate them. I learned that not everyone views my tendency to be outgoing, sociable, and fun-loving as good traits. In fact, some people might actually describe me as being too talkative, consider me as someone who doesn't take time to pay enough attention to detail, claim I don't take things seriously enough and accuse me of not being a good listener! I never considered that fact that while I'm talking, socializing, laughing and moving quickly, that I might be accused of not listening enough, or that I don't slow down to pay attention to the details. It soon became obvious that using my report can make me a better employee and manager, by showing me my strengths and also where I have opportunities for improvement.

My consultation session, also helped me grasp the concept that just because there are people who react and respond different from the way I do, it doesn't necessarily make them wrong; it just makes them different. My newest goal is to try to appreciate those differences and even view them as possible strengths that I don't have. By working together, we combine those strengths and instead of conflicts, we may make us a good team!
