1. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) vary. While you may think you've hit the keyword jackpot by following the rules of the keyword-packing road for one particular ATS system, you're limiting yourself.

2. Not every company uses ATS screening. Suffice it to say, companies come in all sizes, from single, two- or three-person offices to multinational conglomerates employing tens of thousands. Even then, within the globally expansive entities, companies within the companies (e.g., business units) arise, often acting independently of one another. Not every organization has the means, or chooses to apply their recruiting budget to ATS software.

3. Human beings program the screening systems and human beings ultimately read resumes. Despite the naysayers out there, a resume should be written for a human being's eyes and ears. (Note: An ASCII/plain text conversion of your design-savvy resume is a simple solution for uploading into ATS systems; creating two separate resumes simply is not needed.)

4. Net-weave your way into an interview, instead. While the Internet's vastness and ease for trumpeting your resume makes initial sense, you must remember that managing your career, and your job search, requires much more than technology uploads and clicks.

5. Job seekers do have stories to tell about themselves, yet too many careerists get caught up in the keyword frenzy. Instead of the overused language in job qualifications, it’s more important to identify and illustratively describe specific accomplishments in the personal marketing materials, including metrics, when possible, that show the before and after.

6. Include interpersonal skills and behavioral strengths. Showcase your people knowledge and your awareness of diverse communication preferences. Resumes and cover letters should be written to meet the needs of the various reading styles too. These are the real keys for landing interviews and job offers.

Roqueplot reminded everyone, "Don't get bogged down in a keyword gaming struggle. You are a person and people are an employer's greatest resource. If done right your resume won't land on a giant pile of other resumes. Instead, yours will rise to the top."

JOB SEEKERS: LYING ON A RESUME WILL GET YOU IN HOT WATER

West Middlesex, PA: Job searchers can learn from the misfortunes of Robert Irvine, a British-born chef and presenter of Dinner Impossible on the Food Network. “Claiming credentials you don't have is a recipe for disaster,” says Jane Roqueplot, owner of JaneCo's Sensible Solutions, a local Career Advancement Firm.

”Job seekers are most likely to lie about things like their education or number of years they worked for a company -- and these are the easiest things to check,” says Roqueplot. “If you're not caught when the company checks your references, you will likely get tripped up somewhere along the line. And many companies have a policy to fire employees caught lying on their applications -- even if that's several years later.”

Lying on resumes is on the rise. An online survey conducted for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that more than 60% of the 373 human resources professionals who responded reported finding inaccuracies on the resumes they review. Inaccuracies aren't necessarily lies, but anything that brings the job seeker's character into question is likely to end their chances for getting the job.

Irvine admitted that he lied about being a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order and exaggerated his role as a traveling chef for numerous heads of state.

”If the issue is the job searcher's insecurity about their qualifications for the position, there are ways to address the issue without lying,” says Roqueplot. “It's just not worth the risk when there are perfectly legitimate ways to position your credentials -- for example, your lack of a degree -- and still win the interview.”
